Join CVEPN at CAM 2011 (California Association of Museums)

Thursday, March 3, 2011 Pasadena, California

4:00 PM 5:30 PM CONCURRENT SESSIONS (San Diego Room)
SESSION 3D: Joining Forces - Learning the Extent of Honest Collaboration Among Local Museums
Moderator: Allison Fedrick, Exhibits & Public Programs Coordinator. Presenters: Ginger Ridgway, Museum Curator Emeritus; Judy Stapp, Director of Cultural Affairs, Cabazon Band of Mission Indians; Johanna Wickman, Museum Director, La Quinta Museum.
The Coachella Valley and bordering desert cities of California feature over one hundred museums, cultural centers and historic landmarks. Collaboration has been the best way to advertise, build positive institutional relationships, create valley-wide outreach programs, and provide networking opportunities for staff and professionals. Based on the experience of this small association, learn from their efforts, struggles, and the real process of joining forces.

Please consider going! This should be an informative conference with a lot of great sessions.

Mission Statement

The Coachella Valley Emergency Preparedness Network seeks to protect the historic and cultural heritage of the Coachella Valley through emergency preparedness planning activities including central repositories of emergency supplies, on-going programs and training, and providing assistance to its members.

It will establish and maintain central repositories of emergency supplies for collections response and salvage which are accessible by all participating members.

It will provide assistance to its members impacted by an emergency or disaster. CVEPN members will keep current in emergency response procedures through on-going programs and training. The CVEPN is a forum for networking with our professional and volunteer colleagues to share knowledge and expertise.

History & Membership

In June of 2008, a group of 20 staff members of local museums and historical societies first met to discuss the idea of sharing our resources and expertise for emergency and disaster planning, with a primary focus on the management of cultural and historical materials. The Coachella Valley Emergency Preparedness Network was created to explore these possibilities. The group has met monthly and interest and participation has been high. Current membership includes 15 institutions.

Membership in the Coachella Valley Emergency Preparedness Network is open to organizations/institutions which have collections of historic and cultural materials. For membership information contact Ginger Ridgway at gridgway@dc.rr.com.

Project Status

Two repositories of emergency supplies for response to impacted cultural collections have been established in the Coachella Valley. One is located at the Palm Springs Air Museum and the other on the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians reservation. Burrtec Waste Management has donated two 40 foot containers to house supplies at these locations. CVEPN has begun solicitation of equipment and supplies through grant applications and requests for in-kind donations.
